#MarketingMixer | Ins[peer]ation Discussion Recap
As marketing matchmakers, Setup has traditionally hosted a quarterly #MarketersBreakfast to connect client-side and agency-side marketers. Given current gathering regulations, we pivoted to virtual bi-monthly #MarketingMixers to inspire, educate, and bring together marketers.
Our November #MarketingMixer focused on providing an avenue for marketers to share their trials and triumphs during 2020. This intimate event allowed marketing professionals to network directly with one another in breakout rooms, and then share their successes and obstacles with one another in the main room. Marketers walked away with new insights, connections, and the desire to learn more from different industries and perspectives.
The three discussion questions were as followed:
What is a goal or vision you had in March/the beginning of COVID, and how has that goal progressed? What was your strategy? Has it changed? Are you where you thought you’d be 8 months later?
Please share a specific obstacle in your business during the last quarter (or two), and how you/your team problem-solved to get around it.
Describe a recent scenario where you needed to get a certain person/stakeholder on board with your business plan(s), and how you approached persuading them. This could be a boss, a cross-functional colleague, a vendor, a partner, etc.
Key discussion points:
Collaboration
The overall sentiment was that people are finding new ways to adapt to challenges presented, and, although they have faced severe obstacles, they are closer to their teams now more than ever due to an increase in transparency and openness to collaboration and new ideas.
Mental Health
Jane Duncan from The Variable mentioned how in her breakout room with Tim Hernquist (in charge of Product and Business Management at Jabra), they discussed not only prioritizing their team’s mental health, but their client and consumer’s mental health. She called out that there needs to be an emphasis on “concentration, collaboration, and communication” as people on all ends of the consumer journey continue to face problems.
Product Development
Not only marketers, but entire departments within companies are reinventing themselves. There is more attention to supply chains and product development to ensure inventory is stocked based on changing consumer preferences.
Industry Responses
Industries are responding and communicating changes differently depending on Covid’s impact. One thing for certain is that everyone is adapting and innovating. To get specific industry updates, check out these interviews with marketing leaders from the:

When Wicked debuted in theaters in 2024, it didn’t just break records—it created a cultural moment (some would say it defied expectations). With a jaw-dropping $164 million opening weekend surpassing other notable Broadway film adaptations like Les Miserable and Mean Girls, the beloved story featuring some of the world’s biggest stars was immediately a box office triumph and a marketing masterpiece. Behind its success was a multifaceted strategy picking out the perfect partnerships that not only thrilled fans of the original, but also reached entirely new audiences of all ages and preferences (even the musical haters).
