CMO Spotlight | Emily Pachuta - Invesco

Setup COO, Amanda Thompson, virtually sat down with Emily Pachuta, the Chief Marketing and Analytics Officer of the Americas at Invesco. In the interview, Pachuta shares how curiosity plays an important role in her life, beginning with her very first career move when she transitioned from filmmaking to marketing.

Q1 | What is something you learned from your career journey?

Pachuta’s background is littered with seizing the moment, being curious, and tackling opportunities. While taking time away from film to raise her kids, Pachuta met someone at Merrill Lynch who needed a part time editor. Although she knew practically nothing about the business, she boldly admitted her gaps in knowledge, asked a plethora of questions, and took the opportunity.

This leap of faith into the Financial industry taught her that there are multiple career paths to pursue. She hopes by telling her story that women of all ages can have confidence and know that they can build the career that they desire.

Q2 | Is there any advice you’d like to share?

Pachuta never expected to transition to and enjoy a career in marketing. She believes in noticing the things you enjoy about your work. For herself, she acknowledges that, “[Marketing] is a science, but it's also a creative pursuit…and that intersection of art and science should be fun.”

Q3 | What is your superpower?

Curiosity influences her career in analytics by allowing her to predict future behaviors and events. “My interests are very much around predicting - predicting what will happen. Whether that's through data science, where there's actually models and machine learning to do predictive analytics, or whether it's just seeing and listening to people, hearing unmet needs, finding white space for the company. This idea of seeing or being able to anticipate the future is a superpower.”

Q4 | What values are important to you?

Pachuta celebrates individuals who are empathetic. She also values curiosity in others and surrounds herself with curious and intelligent people. “I always like to be learning, so I like to learn from people who are my peers in my organization. I can learn from people at every level.”  

Communication is also very important to Pachuta, and she believes that it's a “critical hard skill” that people have to learn and improve on.

Q5 | How do you coach or mentor your team?

Pachuta believes the key to a great relationship between mentee and mentor is that the relationship needs to be led by the mentee. The mentor's job is to “understand the accountability” that they have to make the relationship successful. This is done by not being a therapist or a crutch for the mentee, but by helping “shape the thinking that already exists in the mentee.”
